leftpicIt's been a fun summer. Our little ATV off road family has had a blast touring our state on our four wheels. Through rain, mud, and dust, from dry to humid, we let the weather and conditions shape our journeys. Seldom, was there a weekend without at least two rides occurring. From the Silver Lake Dunes, to The Huron trail, from Bundy Hill to Houghton, we had members experiencing all Michigan has to offer. Before each ride we had cheerful posts appearing on our board, from those seeking to join the festivities, to those lamenting that they couldn't. Tall tales and dares often appeared, soon followed by actual tales from those that participated in that ride. The pictures and the words entertained those that missed the ride. In the end, it enabled us all to share the ride and the experience. Our actions and those of others intermingled and created the visage and direction of our little online community. Creating more than the sum of it's parts.

Our site is the bottle that contains the nectar of our experiences. Several times throughout the day, I uncork the bottle and take a few gulps to remind me of the fun that I am missing, or just recently experienced. Based on the posts that can be seen, several others are taking a drought and adding a little bit to the nectar. Each addition adds a unique flavor, a flavor that comes closer to ambrosia as the number of posts increase. As the site ages, and the bottle gets passed around and refilled, each unique recipe of the author, adds to the flavor. Thank you for visiting, contributing, and just being there when we need you. Your recipe's and flavors are adding to our success. We appreciate all your visits.

Responsible and safe fun, it is a goal that must all reach for. This goal stretches beyond the intent of this site and into our everyday lives. From ATV, Dirt Bike, Jeep riding to hiking, bicycling, climbing to posting, talking, volunteering. We must exude this concept into all that we do.

In today’s society, there are many looking for ammunition against our favorite activity, not being responsible and safe gives them that ammunition against us. Be it a wheelspin scar at the trailhead or a thread post on the board, both have a destructive value. For those wishing to push the limits or shun responsibility, do so in areas designated as such. If you want to horse around on the trail, do so in the scramble area. If you want to make noise louder than the permitted DB, do it in a private facility. If posting anything negative on the board, think about it and do it in a constructive manner or do it in less visible area where those not needing the information, need not be disturbed or burdened by it.

Let’s foster the fun and make those want to participate either on the trail or on our discussions welcome in heart, thought and spirit. Let’s show those that have differences of opinion and interests that we respect them and will work to resolve any differences that infringe on each other’s activities. It is easier to resolve as man to man then it is as, angry force vs angry force. It doesn’t take much to ruin or set back our hobby. So please think before you ride and type.

Dick Ranney and the MMRC have been busy with the State of Michigan. He is working the bills to further expand Off highway recreational opportunities. Some of it will come at some monetary expenses, but in the end, it looks like we will have some positive enhancements as well as some visibility on how our permit dollars are spent. Stay tuned for information relating to these exciting developments. As soon as something is concrete, we will be posting it here.

Now let’s have some fun, see you on the trails.

Hopefully by now, you’ve had a chance to get your OHV out there on trail; a chance to get out there and enjoy the feeling of the spring air, the warmth sun’s rays, and the smells of the flowers in blossom. Offroad season is into full swing and we are here to help you to enjoy it.

What have we done so far? A group ventured southward and hit the Indian Ridge Leg of the Hatfield and McCoy Trail system in West Virginia. We had a great event at Bundy Hill with over 35 people participating in their spacious and splendid recreational facilities. A group hit the Leota Trail system to see how well their RZR’s fit between the trees. (Heard they declined trying the Denton leg.) Finally we just completed an OHV training class with Rico Vanchina and Bob from Oakland County. Of course we had several other formal and informal rides throughout the last two months, enough for many of us to get the cobwebs removed from our system.

In the upcoming month, we have groups heading off to Moab, Utah, Harlan County, Ky, and Hatfield McCoy Trails in WV. Combine that we our Trail cleanup work near Indian River, an open house in Mecosta at Lakeside, and various memorial day rides and we have a pretty much filled month.

So as I look at the month, I have to remind people to ride safely and practice polite etiquette. All of us are ambassadors of our outdoor and off-road activities. We are using lands that others wish to share and enjoy. Keep the noise down, the litter contained, the horseplay under control, and remember to wear your safety gear. Make all that hear, see, and experience your actions comment on the good things about us. Your positive actions will keep our activities alive and well in the state.

the PresWelcome to the spring season, riders. The prime riding season is upon us, are you ready to roll? I know we at ATV Offroad sure are. We have many activities planned for this year and are just yearning to share them with you. Before we start, though, those of you that have had their machines in storage all winter may want to do a little preparation work on their toys before venturing out with us.

Check and change all appropriate oils and filters. Then take a look at those
grease fittings, bearings, chains, and CV joints. If your fuel is old and wasn’t prepped with a stabilizer, you may want to drain it, or mix some fresh with it, before firing the machine up. Check all rubber surfaces for cracks or holes. Check any opening for unwanted rodent nests. Mice do like eating wiring and hose, so do a nice check of them. Finally check for any machine damage or dings. Make sure to consult your manual for full seasonal readiness procedures as well as details on the plug, oil, and filter types.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this maintenance on your own, take it to a friendly service place or dealership. Its better to do preventative maintenance than it is to suffer a failure on the trail. Remember your car, truck and trailer will need a seasonal inspection as well.

Top off your ATV spring maintenance cycle with the purchase and application of a new trail permit sticker. The state and your fellow riders will appreciate it.

Now with a ready machine, it is apt time to ensure you are ready. Take a look at your safety gear, ensure it is crack free and in good shape. Try it on and ensure that it fits.

Now there no time like the present to whet your appetite for riding, by reading the MI ATV handbook, followed by a perusal of the public trail maps. http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/ While not the most exciting reading. It is essential to keep up to date on the laws and open roads and trails. Knowing how and where to ride keeps the trails and the communities open to us. As long as we play be the laws, and are courteous we’ll be able to continue riding public lands into the future.
